  {"id":7518,"date":"2019-04-02T14:22:15","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T19:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/?p=7518"},"modified":"2019-04-02T14:33:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T19:33:22","slug":"vise-affiliates-to-develop-hand-held-surgical-robot-for-minimally-invasive-prostate-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/vise-affiliates-to-develop-hand-held-surgical-robot-for-minimally-invasive-prostate-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"VISE affiliates to develop hand-held surgical robot for minimally invasive prostate surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 国产传媒 Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE) team of Robert Webster III PhD and Duke Herrell MD is developing a surgical robot for endoscopic transurethral prostatectomy.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration between a mechanical engineer (Webster) and a urologic surgeon (Herrell) resulted in an award of $2.1 million from a National Institutes of Health R01 grant to create a less invasive robotic system to enable prostate removal through the urethra and dexterous reconstructive suturing by surgeons.<\/p>\n<p>The innovation of the project, &#8220;Robot-Enabled Natural Orifice Prostatectomy,\u201d is the ability to deliver needle-sized robotic arms through a standard endoscope, a concept jointly invented by Webster and Herrell. Ninety thousand men undergo invasive prostate cancer surgery every year. The project aims to make the surgery much less invasive by introducing tiny surgical instruments through the natural opening provided by the urethra. If successful, this will eliminate the need to dissect through healthy tissues from the abdomen into the pelvic area, with less disruption to the the nerves that control continence and erectile function.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5053\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2019\/03\/19170931\/Webster-portrait-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2019\/03\/19170931\/Webster-portrait-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2019\/03\/19170931\/Webster-portrait-150x150-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2019\/03\/19170931\/Webster-portrait-150x150-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/>\u201cThe concentric tube idea lets us make our manipulators an order of magnitude smaller than the surgical robots doctors use today.\u00a0 This along with accessing the prostate from a natural orifice will dramatically reduce surgical invasiveness, helping patients heal faster,\u201d said Webster, the Richard A.
