  {"id":6490,"date":"2018-03-05T10:57:37","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T15:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/?p=6490"},"modified":"2018-03-15T09:43:15","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T14:43:15","slug":"vise-affiliates-honored-at-the-february-2018-spie-medical-imaging-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/vise-affiliates-honored-at-the-february-2018-spie-medical-imaging-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"VISE affiliates honored at the February 2018 SPIE Medical Imaging Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four VISE affiliates were recognized for their outstanding work this year at the annual SPIE Medical Imaging meeting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6498\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/IMG_0050-559x650-2-258x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/IMG_0050-559x650-2-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/IMG_0050-559x650-2.jpg 559w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/IMG_0050-559x650-2-86x100.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/>Meg Bobo, a sophomore in electrical engineering, won the Cum Laude Poster Award in the Image Processing conference for her poster, \u201cFully convolutational neural networks improve abdominal organ segmentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Posters are reviewed by conference committees and chosen for exceptional quality.<\/p>\n<p>Her work is breaking new ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has ever used fully convolutional neural networks to segment abdominal organs in MRI&#8217;s before, so I feel that I am really contributing to the field,\u201d she said. \u201cBeyond that, my research showed promising results, so it has the potential to be used someday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am also extremely grateful to my co-authors for all of their work,\u201d said Bobo, who participated in the VISE Summer Undergraduate program in the Medical-image Analysis and Statistical Interpretation (MASI) Lab in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6499\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39503088635_6180ea0577_m-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39503088635_6180ea0577_m-2.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39503088635_6180ea0577_m-2-113x100.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/>Yiyuan Zhao, a graduate student in electrical engineering, was one of two runners up for the Seimens Young Scientist Award with his paper, &#8220;Validation of cochlear implant electrode localization techniques.&#8221; \u00a0The award goes to the best papers in the SPIE Medical Imaging in the Image-Guided Procedures, Robotic Interventions, and Modeling conference each year with an early career scientist as the primary author, based on nomination by their advisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appreciate my advisers recommending me for this Young Scientist competition and gave me constructive feedbacks for my research all the time,\u201d said Zhao, a member of the Medical Image Processing (MIP) lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see this award as an honor and also a motivation for working harder,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, VISE has two finalists for The Robert F. Wagner All-Conference Best Student Paper Award. The chairs of each subconference submit a single paper with a student as first author.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6500\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/25533960307_ee8201c3e5_m-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/25533960307_ee8201c3e5_m-2.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/25533960307_ee8201c3e5_m-2-106x100.jpg 106w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/>Prasanna Parvathaneni, graduate student in electrical engineering and member of the Medical-image Analysis and Statistical Interpretation (MASI) Lab, \u00a0was a finalist in the Imaging Processing conference with her paper titled, \u201cConstructing statistically unbiased cortical surface templates using feature-space covariance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so humbled to know that our paper got nominated and I am proud to be part of MASI Lab that made it possible,\u201d Parvathaneni said. \u201cI hope this work eventually finds application in practical solutions for clinical and research studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6502\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39689130934_7eff839f31_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"131\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39689130934_7eff839f31_m.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170837\/39689130934_7eff839f31_m-103x100.jpg 103w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/>The paper of Jaime Tierney, a Biomedical Elasticity and Acoustical Measurement (BEAM) Lab member, was the pick from the Ultrasound Imaging and Tomography conference Her paper was titled, \u201cCombining adaptive demodulation with singular value decomposition filtering for improved non-contrast perfusion ultrasound imaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accurate non-contrast perfusion ultrasound imaging could help doctors make faster, more informative diagnoses while also sparing patients radiation exposure and costing less, said Tierney, graduate student in biomedical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy research excites me because it has the potential to make a tangible difference in patient care,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four VISE affiliates were recognized for their outstanding work this year at the annual SPIE Medical Imaging meeting.
