  {"id":2755,"date":"2013-11-01T14:40:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T19:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/?p=2755"},"modified":"2017-06-27T15:37:15","modified_gmt":"2017-06-27T20:37:15","slug":"national-robotics-initiative-grant-will-provide-surgical-robots-with-a-new-level-of-machine-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/national-robotics-initiative-grant-will-provide-surgical-robots-with-a-new-level-of-machine-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"National Robotics Initiative grant will provide surgical robots with a new level of machine intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Providing surgical robots with a new kind of machine intelligence that  significantly extends their capabilities and makes them much easier and  more intuitive for surgeons to operate is the goal of a major new grant  announced as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503641\">National Robotics Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year, $3.6 million project, titled Complementary  Situational Awareness for Human-Robot Partnerships, is a close  collaboration among research teams directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.vanderbilt.edu\/bio\/nabil-simaan\">Nabil Simaan,<\/a> associate  professor of mechanical engineering at ¹ú²ú´«Ã½; Howie  Choset, professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University; and Russell  Taylor, the John C.
