This is the case in the world of birds as well. This individual lacks a rapid trill at the end &#8211; as heard in the sounds embedded at the bottom of this story.<\/p>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n        <div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\n        <iframe id=\"vandyframe\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/macaulaylibrary.org\/asset\/472949\/embed\"><\/iframe>\n        <\/div>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n<p>Birds in large populations may have access to better tutors than those in small populations. Therefore, we would expect songs in smaller populations to have less complexity. This use of tutors mirrors how humans learn to make and use tools. The mathematical model that Hudson and Creanza built is based on the longstanding hypothesis that larger populations of humans might make more technological advances.<\/p>\n<p>According to Creanza, \u201cit is tempting to draw parallels between bird\u2019s songs and human music or language. However, a bird\u2019s song is more than just beautiful music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hudson continued, \u201ca young bird often learns his son<span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">gs from someone other than his father, particularly if his father sings a poor song. This is more like how humans learn to make tools \u2013 by finding someone who is good at making something and trying to copy them \u2013 than how humans learn language.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This work builds off <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2019\/09\/04\/high-standards-of-female-songbirds-could-be-driving-their-mates-to-evolve\/\">previous research in the Creanza lab<\/a> exploring the role of mate choice in song evolution. The lab found that female bird preferences can drive the evolution of male song learning behavior. This work extends the previous results by showing a way that complexity could diminish in spite of female choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis mirrors the way that this type of model was originally used in human cultural evolution: to show why seemingly advantageous technologies disappeared from the archaeological record in some groups of people,\u201d explained Creanza.<\/p>\n<p>The pair of researchers are really excited about the future directions of this work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe our model also provides a potential null hypothesis for evolutionary biologists &#8212; an expectation for how behaviors might change over time, even in the absence of changes in selection pressures,\u201d said Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>The next step for the lab will be to test real data against the model.<\/p>\n<p>According to Creanza, \u201clooking through and quantifying large datasets of bird songs is another specialty of our lab, and we are excited to test our predictions in real bird populations!\u201d<\/p>\n<h6>See some examples of variation in bird calls below:<\/h6>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n        <div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\n        <iframe id=\"vandyframe\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/macaulaylibrary.org\/asset\/131936891\/embed\"><\/iframe>\n        <\/div>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n        <div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\n        <iframe id=\"vandyframe\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/macaulaylibrary.org\/asset\/195440471\/embed\"><\/iframe>\n        <\/div>\n        <hr class='space' \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With our model, we show that small populations of birds may, over time, drop the most challenging features of their song due to an interaction between learning difficulty and population size. One species we suggest may have undergone this process is the Golden-crowned sparrow, which finishes its song with a rapid trill in some populations (such as the example from British Columbia), while those at the far northwest extent of the range lack any trill (such as the example from Alaska).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Citation: Hudson, E.J., and Creanza, N.
