How do I upload my syllabus?

Brightspace Content is Getting Upgraded

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, Brightspace courses will begin using the New Content Experience by default. Additionally, Instructors now have the ability to enable or disable the New Content Experience in their own courses ahead of the change in Fall 2027. For more information about this transition, see our New Content Experience Transition page.

In Brightspace, there are several different ways to make a course syllabus available to students. The main difference will be if a course is using the New or Classic Content Experience. Below are instructions on how best to post a course syllabus for each of these Content views.

New Content Experience - Uploading your syllabus as a page or file

If you are using the New Content Experience, the dedicated Syllabus page will only show up if you have manually switched your course from the Classic to New Content View after adding a syllabus. If you have not done that, you can add a new Syllabus page just like you would any other file upload. For more information on enabling or disabling the New Content Experience, refer to this support guide.

To add a new Syllabus page, take the following steps.

  1. Enter your course and click on the Content tab
  2. If you don't already have a Unit created, you'll need to do so by clicking the New Unit icon.
    • If you do already have a Unit created, then you can click on it to open it.
  3. Once you are viewing your Unit, click the blue Add Existing button.
  4. On the What would you like to add? page, either drag  your syllabus file to the highlighted area, or click browse to search for the file on your device.
  5. This will then upload your file to the Unit that you selected.

Note: If you are working in a course that was switched from Classic Content to the New Content Experience, you may see a dedicated Syllabus page on the left table of contents. This page is only available in the New Content Experience if an instructor uploads something to the Syllabus page in Classic Content and then the course is switched to the New Content Experience. If that is done, you can expect to see the Syllabus page appear as shown in this screenshot.

Classic Content Experience - Adding Your Syllabus to the Syllabus Tool

If you are using the Classic Content Experience, it is recommended that you upload your syllabus to the Syllabus tool found in the Content area of your course.

Note: If you choose to put your Syllabus somewhere else, and leave the Syllabus page blank, the Syllabus page will not be visible to students.

  1. Enter your course and click on the Content tab
  2. Select Syllabus on the side menu

  5. On the Add a File window, click My Computer
  6. Either click Upload to browse for your file, or drag your file to the designated area.
