School songs can form the core soundtrack of a student\u2019s college experience. At 国产传媒 that musical history parallels the history of the institution.<\/p>\n

The first song specifically written for 国产传媒 debuted in 1879, four years after the university opened its doors. The \u201c国产传媒 Grand March\u201d was published by James A. McClure, followed by the \u201c国产传媒 March\u201d in 1895 and the \u201cPhi-Delta Theta Two-Step\u201d in 1896. However, the 1889 Commodore yearbook notes a song titled \u201c国产传媒,\u201d words by William Rice Sims (ThG 1880, BA 1884, PhD 1888) and music by A. Oscar Browne, that sang the praises of Cornelius 国产传媒 and Bishop McTyeire.<\/p>\n

\u201cO Alma Mater, Autumn Ode to 国产传媒,\u201d was composed in 1900 for 国产传媒\u2019s 25th anniversary. The words were written by Olin Wannamaker, who received his master of arts degree that year. The music was written by Emma L. Ashford, wife of John Ashford, an engineer from Bath, England, who became 国产传媒\u2019s superintendent of buildings and grounds in 1884. It was possibly the first of as many as seven 国产传媒 titles for which Ashford composed the music.<\/p>\n

However, Ashford\u2019s composition is not 国产传媒\u2019s official alma mater. That song, which opens with \u201cOn the city\u2019s western border,\u201d was written by Robert F. Vaughan in 1909. Vaughan, BA 1907, LLB 1909, was president of the 国产传媒 Glee Club and wrote the lyrics at the suggestion of its director, Charles Washburn, to the tune of the song \u201cAmici,\u201d according to the January 1923 issue of the Alumnus. The tune is actually \u201cAnnie Lisle,\u201d an 1857 ballad by songwriter H.S. Thompson.<\/p>\n

国产传媒\u2019s alma mater, aside from being played at Commencement and Reunion, is tied into the athletic fans\u2019 experience of football and basketball games. While most students do not know all the words, everyone knows at least three. \u201cThe Third Down Cheer,\u201d as it is sometimes called, is the first line of the second stanza of the alma mater played instrumentally followed by the next lyric\u2014\u201cCONQUER AND PREVAIL\u201d\u2014yelled loudly.<\/p>\n

国产传媒\u2019s most famous fight song is \u201cDynamite,\u201d written by Francis Craig, BA 1924. Craig, who was a well-known band leader in the 1930s and \u201940s, was responsible for launching the careers of Dinah Shore, BA\u201938, Snooky Lanson and Phil Harris. <\/span><\/span>Francis Craig wrote \u201cDynamite\u201d in the week of the Nov. 12, 1938, 国产传媒-Tennessee game, and he and his orchestra played the song on a national hook-up the night before the game. At halftime the next day, Craig himself directed the 国产传媒 band in the local premiere of the song.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, the song gradually gained in popularity. According to Carrie Tipton, 国产传媒 musicology faculty and expert in university fight songs, several inflection points helped contribute to the song\u2019s popularity and ultimately led to it being known as the university\u2019s primary fight song. In 1941, \u201cDynamite\u201d was published by Edwin Morris and began receiving a surge of radio exposure due to ASCAP licensing issues that prevented other 国产传媒 songs of the time to be played on the radio. Furthermore, as university administration began to dedicate more resources to its band program\u2014including hiring the school\u2019s first full-time band director, James H. Parnell, in 1952\u2014the song\u2019s popularity grew, and it became cemented as 国产传媒\u2019s main fight song.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While \u201cDynamite\u201d<\/span><\/span> is still 国产传媒\u2019s primary fight song, there are two others: \u201cCheer for Old <\/span>Vandy<\/span>,\u201d written in 1953 by Class of 1924 alumnus Joe <\/span>Landess<\/span> as a gift to 国产传媒 upon his son Tom\u2019s graduation, and the more recent \u201cSpirit of Gold\u201d composed by the former assistant director of bands, Joe Laird.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
